Sunday's Doubleheader Set to Open Spring Season for Men's Tennis Team
January 21, 2019 | Men's Tennis
Liberty and Army West Point will come to Jadwin Gym to open the spring dual-match season for the Princeton men's tennis team with Sunday matches at 10 a.m. and 3 p.m.
Admission to the matches on the E level in Jadwin is free of charge. Video streaming will be available on ESPN+ here.
The match against Liberty will be up first. The Flames opened their season last weekend with a 6-1 loss at Miami (Fla.) before heading north for a three-match trip this weekend beginning Friday at Penn against Drexel and the host Quakers. Princeton and the Flames have never met in a men's tennis team competition.
Sunday's second match will bring together rookie Karl Poling and Army West Point head coach Jim Poling, Karl's father. The Black Knights opened their season last weekend by hosting three matches, defeating Michigan State before losing to Yale and Cal Poly, all by 4-2 scores. Princeton and Army West Point were formerly in the Eastern Intercollegiate Tennis Association together until the sport came under the Ivy League banner following the 1997-98 season. Princeton has won five of the six meetings since then, most recently a 5-2 win at West Point last season, and the Tigers hold a 62-2 all-time series edge over the Black Knights.
Princeton brings five players with ITA rankings into the match, with Poling 82nd in singles, Damian Rodriguez 91st in singles and 39th in doubles with Ryan Seggerman, and Justin Barki and Bill Duo 40th in doubles. Rodriguez was a second-team All-Ivy doubles honoree in 2018.
Myles Conlin and Nikita Larichev are ranked 44th in doubles for Army West Point, and Josh Wilson and Eddie Gutierrez are ranked 53rd in doubles for the Flames.
Following the doubleheader, Princeton will have a three-match trip to Virginia next weekend, playing at Old Dominion before going to William & Mary to face Norfolk State and the host Tribe.
