Princeton Starts 2019 With Dual Meet Win Over Navy

PRINCETON, N.J. – The Princeton Tigers opened up 2019 with a 95-86 dual meet victory over the Navy Midshipmen at Jadwin Gym on Sunday afternoon.

Adam Kelly earned five points for the Tigers in the weight throw as he threw 22.09m, picking up a victory. Freshman Connor Scaglione also nabbed a point for Princeton, throwing a 11.34 for fifth.

Jesse Thibodeau secured a win for the home squad in the long jump, just missing his personal-best (7.31) with a 7.27. Harry Lord earned a point for the Tigers, placing fifth (6.56).

Princeton had three of the top five 60m hurdlers with Christian Brown posting the top time (8.04). Sebastian Silveria was fourth (8.35) while Taraje Whitfield was fifth (8.37). Brown's run was the eighth fastest in program history.

Connor Matthews (49.67) won by the slimmest of margins over Navy's Eric Hughey (49.68) as the two raced in the first heat of the 400m. Justice Dixon had the third fastest time (50.03) among the seven runners.

A pair of freshmen topped the 500m as Kieran McDermott (1:05.57) and Michael Phillippy (1:06.26) had the top two runs.

Simang'Also Ndhov had the ninth fastest 60m time (6.89) in program history, the quickest among 10 runners. Gregory Sholars was fifth, Daniel Afolabi sixth, while Charlie Volker had the top time in his heat.

Sam Ellis was in second halfway through the 800m race, but recovered to take the lead by the 600m mark and get the victory (1:53.72). Franklin Aririguzoh ran to third place (1.54.76).

Conor Lundy finished seven tenths of a second off the lead in the 1000m contest, placing second. Lundy was fourth after 400m, but raced by two other runners to get the second quickest time (2:28.30)

Greg Sholars was one-tenth of a second (22.09) behind Navy's Demetrius Lanier in the 200m race.

Jakob Kintzele was running in fourth at 1600m mark, but recovered to place second (8:36.66) in the 3000m.

C.J. Licata had the best shot-put throw of the meet (17.53), tied for the 10th best ever. Kelton Chastulik was the only other athlete to throw over 17m (17.02).

Princeton produced the top three high jumpers, highlighted by Jeffrey Hollis (2.10, 6-10 ¾). Andrew Diehl was second (2.00, 6-6 ¾) and Jeffrey Lee-Heidenreich was third (1.90, 6-2 ¾).
