Davey's Goal With 2:09 Left Pushes No. 12 Princeton Over No. 11 Delaware, 1-0
October 01, 2019 | Field Hockey
NEWARK, Del. – Hannah Davey's goal with 2:09 to go proved to be the game-winner for the No. 12 Princeton Tigers over the No. 11 Delaware Blue Hens, 1-0, at Fred P. Rullo Stadium on Tuesday evening.
Â
Ali McCarthy collected a turnover and dribbled into the circle, but was stonewalled by several Delaware defenders. Davey picked up the loose ball and dribbled to her right and blasted a shot into the cage for her team-best sixth goal of the season.
Â
The win moved Princeton to 5-4 overall while Delaware dropped to 6-2 this season. It was the Tigers' fourth win against a ranked opponent and the first loss of the campaign at home for the Blue Hens.
Â
Emma Street picked up the first scoring opportunity just two minutes in as she had a point-blank attempt, but Delaware's goalie Sydney Rhodes denied it. Another great chance for the Tigers came about a minute later as Davey went into the circle, sent a ball to Clara Roth, but Roth's deflection was wide.
Â
The second quarter was a defensive battle that featured no shots from either team. Princeton held Delaware without an attempt until there was 41 seconds left in the third stanza as the home squad earned its first corner at the time. The Blue Hens went for a redirect, but it was off the mark.
Â
The tightly fisted affair continued into the final frame as the two top-15 teams could muster just one shot before Davey's tally. Delaware corralled a corner with under a minute remaining but couldn't get a shot off.
Â
With the victory, Grace Baylis now sits second all-time by herself with 44 wins and third in shutouts with 14.
Â
Princeton will welcome Yale to Bedford Field on Friday (5 p.m.) before making the trip to No. 2 Duke on Sunday (1 p.m.).
