PHILADELPHIA – The Princeton University women's volleyball team made it five-consecutive Ivy League victories Friday night inside the Palestra as it took down the University of Pennsylvania, 3-0 (25-19, 26-24-25-22).
The Tigers, who are now 11-6 overall and 7-1 in Ivy League play, have swept four-straight opponents and hold the season sweep against the Quakers as on Friday, November 27 Princeton defeated Penn 3-0 (25-20, 26-24, 25-18) inside Dillon Gym in the first match of the season between the two programs.
Senior Natasha Skov, who has been named the Ivy league Player of the Week for two-straight weeks, continued her stellar play as she had a match-high 12 kills and also added eight digs. Seniors Devon Peterkin had 11 kills and Maggie O'Connell each added 10 while senior Jessie Harris led the match in assists with 42. Sophomore Cameron Dames and freshman Lindsey Kelly led Princeton in digs with 11 each while freshman Olivia Schewe along with Peterkin and junior Clare Lenihan each had two blocks.
The opening set began as a back-and-forth battle, with a Peterkin kill tying the score 4-4. Penn would then use a 5-0 run and jump out to a 9-4 lead, but the Tigers weren't down for long. With the Quakers holding a 10-8 advantage, a kill by O'Connell led off a 6-0 run where Princeton tied the score on an ace by Dames and then took the lead after a Penn attacking error. From that point on, the Tigers would never trail again in the set. Skov closed the set out with a pair of kills as Princeton would prevail 25-19.
Penn was able to take a 6-3 lead early in the second set, but Princeton managed it to knot the score 9-9 following kills by Schewe and O'Connell. The Tigers and Quakers would continue to trade points and with Penn up 13-12, the Tigers would rattle off six-straight points. Schewe was influential in the Tigers' run as she tallied two kills and a block assist. The Quakers called a timeout to try and put a stop to the Tigers' momentum and were successful in doing so; they were able to pull ahead 22-20. Kills by O'Connell and Skov tied it up 22-22 then a kill by Lenihan and an attacking error by Penn saw Princeton pull through for the 26-24 win.
Skov and Lenihan would record kills to open the third set, but it would also prove to a close encounter. Penn was able to gain a 6-4 advantage but a 5-0 run, where Princeton took the lead on a double block by Peterkin and Schewe, saw the Tigers pull ahead 9-6. The Quakers were able to tie it 12-12 but a pair of Penn errors and a kill by Skov gave Princeton a 15-12 lead, an advantage they would not surrender for the remainder of the contest. With the Tigers up 24-22, Peterkin recorded a kill from an assist by Harris to seal the set and match for Princeton.
