November 02, 2019 | Women's Volleyball
ITHACA, N.Y. – The Princeton University women's volleyball team was able to overcome a two-set deficit in a battle of first-place Ivy League teams when it defeated Cornell University 3-2 (19-25, 22-25, 25-21, 25-21, 15-12) Friday night.
The Tigers moved to 8-1 in conference play and are a match clear of the Big Red but still tied with Yale University at the top of the Ivy League standings. It was also a special night for senior Maggie O'Connell as she recorded the 1,000th kill of her career.
O'Connell along with senior Nathasha Skov and junior Clare Lenihan led the Tigers in kills with 13 each. Senior Jessie Harris had a match-high 58 assists and also led the match in service aces with three. Freshman Olivia Schewe had a team and career-high five total blocks while sophomore Cameron Dames' 32 digs were also a match and career-high.
Despite dropping the opening two sets and Cornell opening the third set on a 3-0 run, Princeton used a 7-0 run that featured a pair of O'Connell kills, kills by Skov and Peterson and a trio of errors by the Big Red to spur its comeback attempt. The Big Red would take a 17-16 lead but Princeton managed to tie it 18-18 then go on a 4-0 run keyed by a kill by Lenihan that gave it a four-point advantage from which it never looked back.
Princeton started the fourth set on a high note; Skov and Schewe recorded a double block then O'Connell and Skov had kills to give the Tigers an early 3-0 lead. Cornell never led in the set but got as close as 16-15, however Princeton was able to hold widen the margin thanks to a 5-0 run. Harris would record the assist on a kill by Schewe as Princeton would win the set 25-21 and send the match to a fifth and deciding set.
Skov would open the fifth set with a kill then a Cornell attacking error gave Princeton a 2-0 advantage. While the Tigers were able to take a 5-3 lead, Cornell used a 6-0 run to get ahead, 5-9. Trailing 11-7, a kill by Schewe led off a 7-0 run that saw Princeton reclaim the lead and never give it back. The Tigers closed out the comeback with kills by O'Connell and Skov as they would triumph in the fifth set, 15-12.
