November 02, 2019 | Women's Volleyball
NEW YORK – A match and career-high 19 kills by senior Devon Peterkin helped the Princeton University women's volleyball team outlast Columbia University 3-1 (25-21, 25-17, 23-25, 28-26) Saturday night inside Levien Gymnasium. The victory was Princeton's seventh-straight, with each coming over Ivy League opponents.
The Tigers earned the season sweep against the Lions as they defeated them 3-1 (25-19, 22-25, 26-24, 25-15) on Friday, October 4 inside Dillion Gymnasium.
Along with Peterkin's match and career-high 19 kills, senior Natasha Skov added 17 and junior Clare Lenihan 11. Senior Jessie Harris led the match in assists with 52 while Peterkin and Lenihan led the Tigers in total blocks, each recording four. Sophomore Cameron Dames had a team-high 12 digs while Harris and Peterkin each had 10.
The Tigers started the match off on a high note as a freshman Olivia Schewe kill led off a 5-0 run that put Princeton in an advantageous position early. Columbia showed composure and were able to close the gap to 7-5, but back-to-back kills by Peterkin and a Columbia attacking error gave Princeton a 10-5 advantage. While the Lions were able to make it a 15-12 contest, a pair of kills by Peterkin and a Lion attacking error expanded the Tigers' advantage to 18-12 and from there they never looked back. The Lions had no answer for Peterkin as she ended the set with nine kills as Princeton prevailed, 25-21. Harris would also end the set with 15 assists.
The second set started as a back-and-forth battle but with the score knotted 4-4 a pair of Lenihan kills and a Columbia error saw Princeton take a 7-4 lead. The Lions were able to battle back and make it an 11-11 match but a pair of kills by Lenihan along with a Schewe kill and a double block by Lenihan and Skov expanded Princeton's lead to 14-11. The Lions continued to keep it close, but with the Tigers ahead 17-15 another Peterkin kill from a Harris assist keyed a 6-0 run from which Columbia could not recover. Princeton would take the second set, 25-17.
While a 3-0 run keyed by a kill by Skov gave the Tigers an early 6-3 advantage in the third set, Columbia was able to keep it close throughout. The Lions managed to tie it up 17-17 then take the lead 23-22, but a kill by O'Connell knotted the score at 23-23. The third set would ultimately belong to Columbia, as it prevailed 25-23 and sent the match to a fourth set.
Princeton was able to race out to a 3-0 lead in the fourth set, but much like the rest of the match, Columbia was resilient. The score was tied 17 times throughout the set and the Lions had a match point at 25-24, but a service error followed by an attacking error allowed Princeton back into the set. With the score knotted 26-26, Harris would assist on a Skov kill that gave Princeton a match point. An attacking error by the Lions saw the Tigers prevail, 28-26 and win a hard-fought match, 3-1.
