Fleurant's Two Goals Help Princeton Wear Down Delaware 3-0
October 08, 2019 | Men's Soccer
On a night when Spencer Fleurant had two goals, Jack Roberts had two great saves and the Princeton men's soccer team improved to 6-0 all-time against Delaware at home, the key number was probably 15.
As in the 15 substitutions that Princeton head coach Jim Barlow was able to make on the night, compared to none for the Blue Hens.
Fleurant had his first career two-goal game and Daniel Diaz Bonilla started the night with the first of his career as Princeton defeated Delaware 3-0.
Barlow used eight players off his bench in the game. Delaware's bench consisted solely of a backup goalkeeper, which meant that all 11 starters went the distance for the Blue Hens.
Princeton led 1-0 at the half on Diaz Bonilla's goal 19 minutes in. as the freshman from Vienna, Va., finished a pass from Frankie DeRosa. At halftime, Delaware had an edge in shots 5-3, and it would have been a 1-1 game were it not for a great save from Roberts on a one-on-one chance.
The Tigers would completely wear the Blue Hens down in the second half, with an 11-2 edge in shots in the final 45 minutes that led to several chances to put the game away. Fleurant, who had one goal for the year prior to the game, finally did, scoring twice less than four minutes apart, first from Ryan Clare with 11 minutes left and then from Truman Gelnovatch to seal it at 3-0.
Roberts preserved the shutout with a sprawling save with less than two minutes to play.
The win improved the Tigers to 6-3 on the season as they prepare to head to Brown Saturday for their second Ivy League game.
