Women’s Volleyball Shares Ivy Title With Yale After Five-Set Battle
November 16, 2019 | Women's Volleyball
NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Princeton University women's volleyball team will share the 2019 Ivy League championship with Yale University and face the Bulldogs in a one-match playoff for a spot at the NCAA Championships after falling in an epic five set battle 3-2 (16-25, 25-22, 18-25, 25-21, 17-15) Saturday night inside the Lee Amphitheater.
The championship is Princeton's 18th Ivy League title. The program with the second-highest number of championships is Yale, who now has 11, highlighting the Tigers' historical success.
Ivy League title number 18 was also the Tigers' fourth under the guidance of head coach Sabrina King, who led Princeton to Ivy League championships in 2015, 2016 and 2017.
Due to Princeton holding a 5-3 advantage in total sets this season, the Tigers will host the playoff match on Friday, November 22 at 7 p.m. inside Dillon Gymnasium. It will be the second time in three seasons that the Tigers have met Yale in an Ivy League playoff match as Princeton overcame the Bulldogs 3-0 (25-23, 25-18, 25-23) and earned an appearance at the NCAA Championships on Saturday, November 18 2017.
Senior Maggie O'Connell led the match in kills with 22 and had an outstanding .405 hitting percentage. Junior Clare Lenihan added 16 kills while seniors Devon Peterkin and Natasha Skov each had 13. Senior Jessie Harris continued her stellar play by recording a career-high 66 assists and also adding 11 digs while sophomore Cameron Dames had a match-high 28 digs. Freshman Lindsey Kelly also made an impact as she finished with a match and career-high five service aces and a career-best 11 digs.
Yale took an early lead in the opening set, but a Skov kill tied it up 10-10 and led off a 6-0 run that featured three service aces by Kelly and a pair of kills by Lenihan that swung the momentum Princeton's way. Despite the early deficit, the Tigers would take the first set 25-16.
The second set was a back-and-forth battle that saw the score tied eight times. In the late stages of the set a kill by O'Connell would knot the score 22-22, but the Bulldogs closed the set out on a 3-0 run to win 25-22 and make it a 1-1 contest.
Princeton would bounce back in the third set; with Yale up 3-2 a kill by Harris ignited an 8-0 run that featured a pair of service aces by Kelly, kills by Lenihan and Skov along with a Harris block and a Bulldog attacking error that gave the Tigers a comfortable 10-3 advantage. Yale could not climb back into the set and an O'Connell kill ended it as the Tigers prevailed 25-18.
A pair of kills by O'Connell along with a kill by Skov and a Yale attacking error helped Princeton take a 4-1 lead in the fourth set, but the Bulldogs were determined to defend their home court. Yale would take its first lead at 12-11 and not look back from there, holding on for the 25-21 win and setting up a deciding fifth set.
The fifth set saw Princeton take a 5-1 lead after a pair of early kills by O'Connell along with kills by Skov and Lenihan and a Bulldog attacking error. A Lenihan kill would give Princeton match point at 14-12 but Yale battled back to take a 15-14 lead. Lenihan would record another kill to make it 15-15, but the Bulldogs would ultimately prevail 17-15.
