Despite Strong Start, Men’s Basketball Falls to Indiana
November 20, 2019 | Men's Basketball
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – In the first meeting between the two programs since 1996, the Princeton University men's basketball team would lead during the first half but could not outlast Indiana University Wednesday night inside Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall as the Tigers fell to the Hoosiers 79-54.
Sophomore Jaelin Llewellyn had a team-high 15 points while freshman Ryan Langborg provided a spark off the bench with an early career-high 13 points. Making his first career start, freshman Tosan Evbuomwan also had an early career-high as he finished with 10 points on 4-of-7 shooting from the field.
Senior Richmond Aririguzoh bullied his way to the opening basket of the game, dropping in a left-handed baby hook with 19:42 on the clock and sophomore Drew Friberg followed by draining a three-pointer from the top of the arc to give Princeton a 5-2 lead with 18:50 left in the half.
Indiana would respond by taking a 17-11 lead midway through the half, but Langborg would make a step back jumper from behind the three-point arc with 8:34 remaining in the half and senior Jose Morales would follow with a pullup jumper to make it a 19-18 game with 8:01 on the clock.
Llewllyn found his rhythm and knocked down a three-pointer from the top of the circle with 7:25 left in the half to tie it up 21-21. He then gave Princeton a 25-24 lead with 6:01 on the lock with a fast break layup and while IU would re-take the lead, he made another driving layup off a Hoosier turnover with 1:19 remaining in the half to knot the score 31-31. Indiana still managed to take a 35-31 advantage into halftime, despite Llewellyn's 13-point half.
While Evbuomwan came out of the half and made a pull-up jumper from the right short corner with just 45 seconds into play that trimmed Indiana's lead to two, Indiana responded by expanding its lead to eight points with 15:44 left in the game.
Llewellyn connected on a pair of free throws with 14:49 on the clock to make it a 43-36 contest but the Hoosiers would go on a run and take a 53-37 lead with 12:07 left in the game. Aririguzoh would make a pair of free throws at 11:43 as Princeton attempted to cut into the deficit.
Evbuomwan would drain a pair of free throws with 6:35 left in the game, but Indiana got hot and raced out to a 23-point lead with 4:18 left to play. Despite Princeton's attempt to make a late run, Indiana held on for the 79-54 victory.
