Men’s Basketball Suffers Late Setback Against Arizona State
November 26, 2019 | Men's Basketball
PRINCETON, N.J. – Despite leading at halftime and a historic night on the boards from senior Richmond Aririguzoh, the Princeton University men's basketball team fell to Arizona State University 67-65 after a late Sun Devil three-pointer Tuesday night inside Jadwin Gymnasium.
Aririguzoh's game and career-high 18 rebounds were the most by a Princeton player since Mason Rocca since against Georgetown University on March 10, 1999. No Princeton player has had more than 18 rebounds since Bob Roma had 19 rebounds against Villanova University on December 12, 1978.
Along with his 18 rebounds, Aririguzoh also led the Tigers in scoring with 16 on 8-of-14 shooting. He also tied his career-high in assists after handing out a team-high five while blocking a team-high two shots.
Sophomore Drew Friberg added 11 points for Princeton while sophomore Jaelin Llewellyn added 10 points and a season-high six rebounds. Senior Jose Morales finished with a season-high nine points off the bench.
Aririguzoh dominated the early stages of the game, scoring the first four points of the contest. A three-pointer by freshman Ryan Langborg gave Princeton a 9-4 advantage with 15:51 on the clock but the Sun Devils battled back to make it a 9-8 game with 14:10 remaining. A fast break dunk by Aririguzoh with 13:58 left in the half sparked an 8-0 run that saw the Tigers take an 18-10 leader on a jumper by Morales with 11:44 left in the half.
A layup by freshman Tosan Evbuomwan with 7:40 left in the half would see Princeton take its biggest lead of the half at 26-14 and while ASU was able to narrow the deficit, the Tigers took a 31-15 advantage into halftime.
The second half was a true back-and-forth battle as Arizona State would take a 37-36 lead with 16:32 left to play. A deep three-pointer by Morales with 15:38 left to play saw the Tigers take a 39-37 lead, but with 10:46 on the clock Arizona State jumped back out in front, 47-46.
Llewellyn would drain a triple with 10:16 on the clock which saw Princeton take a 49-47 advantage and the Tigers lead would get as high as seven after a Friberg three-pointer with 7:55 remaining that saw Princeton go up 56-49.
The Sun Devils would retake the lead 61-60 with 3:33 left to play but a layup by Evbuomwan saw Princeton take a 65-64 lead with 20 seconds left to play. With just five seconds on the clock, Arizona State would make a three-pointer from the right corner that put it ahead 67-65 and gave it the victory.
