Men’s Basketball Uses Balanced Attack to Down Bucknell, 87-77

LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Princeton University men's basketball team amassed its highest point total of the season and had five players finish with double-digit points as the Tigers downed Bucknell University 87-77 Saturday afternoon inside Sojka Pavilion.
Junior Ryan Schwieger and sophomore Jaelin Llewellyn tied for the team-high in points with 17 each while senior Richmond Aririguzoh finished with 15, junior Jerome Desrosiers with 10 and freshman Tosan Evbuomwan with 10. Evbuomwan also added a game and career-high eight rebounds while Schwieger led the team and game in assists with four.
As a team, the Tigers had an efficient shooting night as they went 30-of-59 from the field and 13-of-25 from behind the three-point line. The Tigers also received outstanding production from their bench as it scored 32 points to only 14 by Bucknell's bench. Princeton dominated on the boards, out-rebounding Bucknell 36-25 while recording 16 assists to 10 by the Bison.
The Tigers got off to a strong start thanks to a driving layup by Llewellyn with 19:47 on the clock followed by an Aririguzoh layup with 19:24 remaining in the half. While Bucknell was able to respond with a basket off its own, a pair of freshman Ryan Langborg three-pointers gave the Tigers a 10-2 advantage resulting in a Bison timeout at 17:37.
Bucknell was able to battle back and knot the score 17-17 with 12:12 left in the half but a three-pointer from the top right elbow extended by sophomore Ethan Wright with 11:50 on the clock saw Princeton take the lead again.
Schwieger would connect on a driving layup with 10:51 left in the half that gave Princeton a 24-20 advantage as the Tigers continued to expand their lead. He then sank a pair of free throws at 8:52 that saw Princeton get ahead 28-25 and Langborg made a pull-up jumper from the right short corner with 7:44 on the clock and Princeton led 30-25, but a 6-0 run from Bucknell saw the Bison take a 31-30 advantage with 4:23 remaining in the half.
A pair of Aririguzoh free throws followed by an Aririguzoh layup with 3:36 on the clock gave the Tigers a 34-31 advantage but the Bison got hot late in the half and took a 43-39 advantage into halftime.
Bucknell scored the opening basket of the second half but a three-pointer by Schwieger followed by a Llewellyn three-point play with 17:35 left in the game gave Princeton a 50-47 advantage.
The Tigers continued to hold the lead and a three-pointer by Desrosiers with 16:13 remaining saw Princeton get ahead 56-50 then a three-pointer from the top of the key by Evbouomwan at 15:12 gave Princeton its biggest lead of the game at that point, 59-50.
Princeton continued to expand its lead after a put-back by Desrosiers at 13:36 and a three-pointer by Llewellyn with 13:06 on the clock saw the Tigers take a 67-50 advantage.
Bucknell was able to narrow the margin to 70-64 with 9:18 left to play but a layup by Evbuomwan with 6:33 remaining helped to keep Princeton in front, 74-68. Schwieger drained a three-pointer with 5:47 on the clock then sophomore Drew Friberg knocked down a pair of free throws with 5:30 remaining that saw Princeton take a double-digit lead heading into the late stages of the contest at 79-69.
Schwieger and Friberg stayed hot, draining three-pointers with 4:01 and 3:29 left to play and Princeton expanded its lead to 14 points at 85-71. It was Schwieger again connecting on a late jumper in the paint with 46 seconds left to play that helped the Tigers keep a comfortable lead of 87-75 and while Bucknell managed to add two more points, Princeton held on for the 87-77 victory.
