Llewellyn Has Career-High 28 Points, Men’s Basketball Falls to Drexel
December 04, 2019 | Men's Basketball
PHILADELPHIA – Sophomore Jaelin Llewellyn poured in 18 points in the second half as part of his career-high 28 points Wednesday night, but the Princeton University men's basketball team's comeback attempt came up just short inside the Daskalakis Center as it fell 82-76 to Drexel University.
Llewellyn set a new career-high for the second time this season with 28 points to lead the team while also making a career-high four three-pointers. He was one of four Tigers to score in double figures; senior Richmond Aririguzoh, junior Ryan Schwieger and freshman Tosan Evbuomwan each finished with 10 points. Freshman Ryan Langborg also added nine points, and made 3-of-5 attempts from beyond the arc.
Aririguzoh also led the team in rebounds as he pulled down seven and Evbuomwan tied for the game-high with a career-high three steals.
Aririguzoh dropped in a hook shot for the first basket of the game with 19:31 on the clock, setting the tone for his impressive first half. Langborg drained his first three-pointer of the contest with 18:41 left to play to give Princeton a 5-2 advantage, but Drexel would take a 13-9 lead with 15:28 left in the half.
While the half proved to be a back-and-forth battle, Princeton would not lead until there was 1:15 on the clock following a Llewellyn layup when it took a 39-28 advantage. The Tigers' lead was brief as Drexel scored once more prior to halftime and took a 40-39 lead into the intermission.
Aririguzoh came out of halftime and cut the lead to two on a layup with 19:23 left to play, but Drexel got hot, expanding it to 11 points and 55-44 game with 14:24 on the clock.
The Dragons continued to build their lead, extending to 15 with 5:24 remaining in the half. Llewellyn would sink a pair of free throws with 3:33 remaining then make a three-pointer with 3:08 on the clock, cutting the lead to single digits and making it 73-64 game.
Sophomore Max Johns drained a three-pointer with 1:27 left to play then made a layup with 1:11 on the clock to make it a 79-72 contest then Llewellyn would make four-straight free throws with 39 seconds on the clock to cut the lead to three points at 79-76.
Despite the overall effectiveness of Princeton's press, Drexel managed to hold on for the 82-76 victory.
