Princeton Falls In OT Heartbreaker To Iowa, 77-75
November 20, 2019 | Women's Basketball
IOWA CITY, Iowa – Julia Cunningham's three-pointer at the buzzer extended the game into overtime, but the Princeton Tigers dropped a heartbreaker, 77-75, to the Iowa Hawkeyes at Carver-Hawkeye Arena on Wednesday night.
Â
Trailing by three (67-64) with eight-tenths of a second left, the Tigers called timeout and drew up a play.
Â
Cunningham, from way beyond the arc, got the ball and heaved it towards the basket and knocked it in.
Â
Two from the charity stripe put Iowa in the lead. Princeton would have two chances to tie the game from the free-throw line, but could not send the contest to a double overtime.
Â
Bella Alarie finished with 26 points on 10-of-18 shooting, hitting three three-pointers. She added seven rebounds, four blocks and three assists. Cunningham was two shy of a personal best, nabbing 17 points. Grace Stone had 13 points, four rebounds and three assists in the loss.
Â
Alarie's trey right before the end of the quarter put the Tigers in front, 16-14, after 10 minutes. The two-time Ivy Player of the Year registered 10 points in that stanza.
Â
Head coach Carla Berube's squad allowed just one basket over the first four minutes of the second frame, expanding its lead to double-digits, 26-16. A timeout by Iowa hardly slowed down Princeton as it went on to take a 13-point lead, 37-24, after a bucket from Taylor Baur. The Tigers went into the locker room with a 37-27 halftime advantage.
Â
Trailing by 10, 45-35, halfway through the third quarter, Iowa closed with a 10-2 run, getting the gap to two, 47-45. A three-pointer to begin the fourth put Iowa up.
Â
Princeton weathered the storm, jumping ahead with 8-of-10 (58-52) with 6:05 left. Iowa rallied as a trey from Makenzie Meyer put the home team up, 61-60, as the clock read 2:10.
Â
The two units exchanged leads before four free throws had Iowa up three prior to Cunningham's buzzer beater.
Â
Princeton dropped its first game of the season to fall to 4-1 overall. Iowa improved to 3-1. The Tigers battle Monmouth at Jadwin Gym on Sunday (Nov. 24). Tip-off is set for 1 p.m. Â
