Tigers Fall to Dukes despite Friberg's Career Night
PITTSBURGH – The Princeton University men's basketball team fell to Duquesne University 94-67 in its season opener Tuesday night inside PPG Paints Arena despite a career night from sophomore Drew Friberg.
Playing in his home state, Friberg set several career-highs for Princeton. Along with his career-high 19 points also tying the team-high, his seven made field goals and five made three-pointers were also career-bests. Additionally, he pulled down a career-high five rebounds.
Senior Richmond Aririguzoh tied for the team high in points with 19 on 8-of-10 shooting and had a game-high eight rebounds while sophomore Jaelin Llewellyn finished with 15 points. In the first game of his college career, freshman Keeshawn Kellman provided energy off the bench as he finished with six points and five rebounds in just six minutes. Sophomore Max Johns also added a career-high four assists for the Tigers.
Llewellyn helped Princeton get off to a strong start, knocking down a three-pointer on the Tigers' first shot of the game with 19:40 on the clock then following with a crafty drive down the lane with 17:19 remaining in the half that gave Princeton a 7-4 lead. Friberg would sink a deep three-pointer from the right elbow extended to give Princeton a 12-4 lead, resulting in a timeout by the Dukes with 16:02 left in the half in an attempt to halt the Tigers' momentum.
Despite the Dukes' timeout, they still struggled to contain Llewellyn as he drove down the middle of the key and threw down a thunderous right-handed dunk to give the Tigers a 16-9 lead with 13:38 left in the half.
Friberg continued his hot shooting and Johns continued to find the open man with 11:19 on the clock as Friberg would make his second three-pointer of the night to give Princeton a 23-9 advantage.
With 7:09 left in the half Duquesne had worked itself back into the game and cut the lead to two as Princeton led 27-25. The Dukes would take a 32-29 lead with 4:19 remaining in the half but their lead would not last long as Friberg's third three-pointer with 3:31 on the clock gave Princeton a 35-35 advantage. Senior Jose Morales would drain a three-pointer from the right corner inside the final 30 seconds and the Tigers would take a 42-37 lead into halftime.
The Dukes would score the first two baskets of the second half but a free throw by Aririguzoh would halt their mini-run. Friberg continued his hot shooting, sinking his fifth three-pointer of the game with 16:39 remaining to cut Duquesne's lead to 49-48. Llewellyn would then make a driving layup with 14:37 on the clock to make it a 54-52 contest.
With 10:36 on the clock the Dukes had expanded their lead to 69-54 but Aririguzoh continued to be a force inside, tallying his 15th point and eighth rebound by that point in the game.
The remainder of the second half would largely belong to Duquesne. Kellman would score the first basket of his college career on a layup after collecting an offensive rebound with 7:08 on the clock, but the Dukes would hold on for the 94-67 victory.
