Princeton Remains On Top Of Ivy Standings, Sweeps Harvard
November 09, 2019 | Women's Volleyball
PRINCETON, N.J. – The Princeton Tigers put themselves in the driver seat for an Ivy League title next weekend with a 3-0 sweep over the Harvard Crimson.
With the sweep, the Tigers are now 11-1 in the conference, one game up on Yale (10-2). Princeton takes on Brown next Friday (7 p.m.) and Yale (5 p.m.) next Saturday, both on the road. If the Tigers win both games, they're the outright champion. If Princeton and Yale end up with the same record, those two squads will play a one-match playoff. There is a possibility of a three-way tie with Cornell where one team hosts the other two squads as well.
Prior to the game, Princeton honored the Class of 2020, Jessie Harris, Maggie O'Connell, Devon Peterkin and Natasha Skov. That quad has won two Ivy League titles and has a chance at a third.
The Tigers found themselves trailing in the first set, 15-10, but roared back to flip the contest with nine of the next 10 points. Princeton expanded its lead to 21-17, forcing Harvard to call timeout. The stoppage gave a jolt to the Crimson as they climbed back within one, 21-20. The Tigers closed the set with three of four to earn a 25-22 win.
In set two, Princeton ran off 10 of the first 13 points and was never really threatened in a 25-11 victory.
Knotted up at 11-all in set three, head coach Sabrina King's unit posted six of seven to take an 17-12 advantage. This time, Harvard rallied getting the set within one, 20-19, but it could not get any closer as Princeton collected a 25-22 victory.
King's squad had four players with at least ten kills in Clare Lenihan (12), O'Connell (11), Peterkin (10) and Skov (10). Peterkin had a double-double with 18 digs while Harris had 43 assists in the victory.
