November 15, 2019 | Women's Volleyball
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Princeton University women's volleyball team clinched at least a share of the Ivy League title Friday night when it defeated Brown University 3-0 (25-17, 25-18, 25-21) inside the Pizzitola Sports Center.
With a win over Yale University (14-7, 10-2) tomorrow, Princeton will be outright Ivy League champions and earn its eighth NCAA Tournament appearance. A loss would result in a one-match playoff with the winner going to the NCAA Tournament.
Senior Devon Peterkin continued her outstanding play as she led the match in kills with 17 on a .343 hitting percentage while also adding seven kills. Junior Clare Lenihan added 13 kills with a .434 hitting percentage while senior Natasha Skov posted a double-double of 10 kills with 12 digs. Senior Jessie Harris, last week's Ivy League Player of the Week, had a match-high 48 assists and sophomore Cameron Dames led the Tigers in digs with 14.
Senior Maggie O'Connell ensured the Tigers got off to a positive start, recording a kill for the opening point of the match then assisting on a block with Lenihan to give Princeton a 2-0 advantage. While the Bears attempted to battle back, the Tigers raced out to a 9-2 lead. Princeton kept its sizeable lead for much of the set and Lenihan kill would give it a 20-12 advantage. Up 26-16, Harris would assist on kills to Lenihan to give the Tigers set point and then ultimately to win the set as Princeton would prevail, 25-17. In the first set alone Harris tallied an incredible 17 assists.
Brown would take a 1-0 lead in the second set, but the Bears' advantage did not last long as a double block by Lenihan and Skov gave the Tigers a 2-1 lead and ended what was Brown's only lead of the set. Another kill by Peterkin gave Princeton a 16-10 advantage a kill by freshman Olivia Schewe gave the Tigers a 24-16 lead, as it maintained its strong play throughout the set. Harris would record an assist on an O'Connell kill on the final point of the set as Princeton came out on top, 25-18.
The Tigers took a 6-3 lead in the third set then used a kill by Skov to lead off a 7-0 run that also featured a pair of kills by Lenihan, kills by Peterkin and Harris along with an error by the Bears to take a commanding 12-3 lead. Brown attempted to make a late run and made it a 24-21 contest, but a kill by O'Connell closed out the set 25-21 and gave the Tigers the victory.
