Men’s Basketball Outlasts Iona in OT at Barclays Center, 90-86

BROOKLYN, N.Y. – Led by a career-high 22 points from sophomore Drew Friberg, the Princeton University men's basketball team came back from a 16-point deficit to outlast Iona College 90-86 in overtime Tuesday night inside the Barclays Center at the Air Force Reserve Basketball Hall of Fame Invitational.
Friberg's 22 points came on 6-of-9 shooting from behind the three-point the line, also a career-high, and 4-4 shooting from the free throw line. He also pulled down five rebounds and handed out three assists.
Three other Tigers finished with double figures; sophomore Ethan Wright had a career-high 16 points and added six rebounds, junior Ryan Schwieger finished with 16 points and a tied his career-high with five assists and senior Richmond Aririguzoh had 14 points on 6-of-7 shooting. Senior Jose Morales made an impact off the bench as he had a season-high seven points, a season-high six assists and a career-high five steals.
The Gaels started the game on a 10-0 run that was stopped when Aririguzoh converted on a layup with 16:31 on the clock. Princeton managed to trim Iona's lead further when Wright made a fast-break layup with 13:55 left to play that made it a 16-10 game.
Friberg would drain a three-pointer from the right corner after a kick-out pass from Schwieger to make it a two-point game, 18-16, with 11:24 left in the half.
Wright got hot in the latter stages of the first half, knocking down a three-pointer with 8:18 remaining in the half making it a 25-21 contest then a driving layup with 6:34 on the clock. With 5:36 left in the half, Wright sank another three-pointer and trimmed Iona's lead to three points at 29-26. Despite the Tigers' best efforts to battle back, Iona expanded its lead to 42-30 by halftime.
The Gaels stayed hot early in the second and built a 16-point advantage, 56-40, with 13:30 left to play. Schwieger began Princeton's comeback when he made a jumper in the paint with 12:31 remaining that sparked a 9-0 run that also featured a Schwieger three-pointer and a pair of layups by sophomore Elijah Barnes that made it a 56-49 contest with 10:11 on the clock.
Iona had taken a 62-51 lead with 7:45 left to play but Friberg scored eight-straight points, first sinking a three-pointer with 7:27 on the clock then making a pair of free throws and making another three-pointer, which made it a 52-69 game with 6:05 remaining.
Morales knotted the score 69-69 when made a three-pointer with 2:55 on the clock then sophomore Jaelin Llewellyn made a layup with 1:59 remaining. Despite Princeton's comeback, a winner could not be decided at the end of regulation as the score was tied 73-73.

Schwieger would knot the score 80-80 with 1:36 left to play when he blew past his defender and threw down a thunderous one-handed dunk. Iona took the lead again, but Friberg drained another three-pointer with 42 seconds left to play and gave the Tigers an 83-82 advantage.
Wright made a layup with 0:05 on the clock to give Princeton an 88-85 advantage and Morales knocked down a pair of free throws with 0:02 left to play and the Tigers would hold on for the 90-86 victory.
