No. 12 Princeton Earns Split During Day One of ASU Challenge

TEMPE, Ariz – The No. 12 Princeton Tigers picked up a split during the first day of the Arizona State Challenge, falling to host school, 13-6, but earning a 9-8 win over the No. 25 Azusa Pacific Cougars.
No. 7 Arizona State 13, No. 12 Princeton 6
The Tigers remained within striking distance in the first quarter as the Sun Devils led 2-0 after eight minutes. Arizona State ran off four straight tallies in the second frame before Nicole Kresich registered a tally with two seconds left.
Arizona State opened up the second half with four consecutive tallies before Lindsey Kelleher got on the board. The Sun Devils led 11-2 after three quarters and weren't threatened the rest of the way.

The two seniors (Eliza Britt and Lindsey Kelleher) got the scoring started as the Tigers registered the first two goals of the contest. After an Azusa Pacific tally, Princeton rattled off four straight goals, taking a 6-3 lead into the intermission.
Azusa Pacific registered the first goal of the second half, but Princeton scored two straight to jump ahead, 8-4, with three minutes left.
Trailing by four (9-5) as the fourth frame got started, the Cougars shut out the Tigers in the quarter, cutting their deficit to one (9-8) as the clock read 1:52. Princeton's defense held strong to close the contest as Derek Ellingson secured his first victory as head coach.
Princeton finishes the ASU Challenge tomorrow (Feb. 2) with two matches vs. No. 10 UC-Santa Barbara (11 a.m.) and CSU-Monterey Bay (4 p.m.).
