Schwieger's Career Night Helps Lift Tigers to Win Over Cornell
February 22, 2019 | Men's Basketball
Ryan Schwieger scored a career-high 23 points as the Princeton men's basketball team moved into a tie for second place in the Ivy League standings with a 68-59 win over Cornell Friday night in Jadwin Gym.
Heading into Saturday's play, Yale leads at 8-1, two games in front of Princeton and Harvard at 6-3. Cornell is fourth at 5-4 with Brown one game out of the final Ivy League Tournament spot at 4-5. The Bulldogs and Crimson will meet Saturday in New Haven.Â
"Ryan, like a lot of really good guards that we've had, just put us on his back, put their players on his back and got easy hoops for us," Mitch Henderson, the Franklin C. Cappon-Edward G. Green '40 head coach of Princeton men's basketball, said. "Jerome (Desrosiers) with a double-double, and then Myles (Stephens) again, second time in a row against (Cornell's Matt) Morgan. Morgan is so difficult to guard. He's so hard to guard."
An early 12-0 run put Princeton up for all of the final 37 minutes of the game, though Cornell made it interesting late. Princeton's lead grew as large as 18 points at 54-36 with less than 14 minutes to go, but Cornell answered that with a 14-0 run to pull within four with less than nine minutes to go.
The Tigers, however, never let Cornell closer than two points in the second half, turning back a Big Red rally once Cornell cut the gap to 59-57 and then 61-59, last with less than five minutes to go. Princeton closed the game on a 7-0 run, keeping Cornell off the board for the final 4:50. During that stretch, Princeton held the Big Red to 0 of 10 from the field to pull away.
Â
Jaelin Llewellyn, with 15 points, and Jerome Desrosiers, with 11, joined Schwieger in double figures for the Tigers, and Riley Voss led Cornell with 13 points while Princeton held the Ivy League's leading scorer, Matt Morgan, to 12 points, 11.6 below his per-game average entering the night.
Â
Princeton helped its cause by outshooting Cornell 43.1 percent to 38.6 percent and outrebounding the Big Red 41-30. Princeton's 12 offensive rebounds led to an 11-4 edge in second-chance points, and despite Princeton committing one more turnover than Cornell, 12-11, the Tigers outdid the Big Red in points off turnovers, 19-14.
"That's a really important win for us and we've got to get two on the weekend," Henderson said. "I've been telling the guys, this is the time of year you really want to be playing well. We're getting there. I can feel it. I was telling them, I can feel it coming and I think we're getting really close."
The Tigers will aim for the weekend sweep Saturday with an 8 p.m. tip against Columbia.
