Princeton Earns Ivy Weekend Sweep With 65-59 Win Over Columbia

PRINCETON, N.J. – A stout defensive effort in the fourth quarter was the difference as the Princeton Tigers dropped the Columbia Lions, 65-59, at Jadwin Gym on Saturday afternoon.

After allowing 25 points in the third quarter, Princeton gave up just four baskets in the final frame, holding off Columbia for its fifth straight victory and second consecutive Ivy League weekend sweep.

Bella Alarie led the Tigers with 14 points while Carlie Littlefield and Grace Stone had 13 points each. Stone, who matched her personal-high in points, and Littlefield led the team with eight rebounds apiece. Taylor Baur scored seven points and grabbed seven rebounds including four offensive caroms off the bench in the win.

Tied at 8-all, the Tigers rattled off 11 straight over a three-minute spurt (19-8) as the clock ticked under four minutes. Princeton extended its lead to 15 before settling with a 25-14 advantage after the first quarter.

A 12-3 sprint after Columbia got within single-digits push the home squad to a 37-19 lead as the second stanza got underway. The Tigers kept their distance, taking a 21-point differential at the break (45-24).

This time it was Columbia's turn to go on a run as 14-4 jump got it as close as nine (49-40) at the 4:05 mark. The Tigers got the margin back to double-digits a few times before a basket by the Lions' Janiya Clemmons set the contest at an eight-point affair (57-49).

A three-point play by Sienna Durr pulled the Lions to within three (59-56), its closest margin of the matchup since the first quarter, with 5:51 remaining.

Columbia scored one more time after that.

Princeton improved to 15-9 this season and 7-2 in the Ivy League. Columbia dropped to 7-16 and 3-7 in the conference. The Tigers get right back at it on Tuesday at Penn (18-4, 8-1 Ivy). Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. The game can be streamed on ESPN3.
