Princeton Allows One Basket in The Fourth Quarter To Pull Away From Penn, 68-53

PHILADELPHIA – Princeton allowed just one basket in the fourth quarter as it defeated the Penn Quakers, 68-53, at the Palestra on Tuesday night.

With the win, the Tigers improve to 8-2 in the Ivy League, tied for first place with the Quakers.

Bella Alarie contributed a game-high 33 points along with 10 rebounds, including eight offensive caroms. Carlie Littlefield registered 14 points, six assists and five rebounds while Gabrielle Rush contributed 13 points. Sydney Jordan was a game-high +20 in the win.

After Penn scored the first basket of the game, Princeton rattled off 10-of-12 to jump ahead, 10-4, with under four minutes to go. A Rush trey extended the lead to seven (15-8) before consecutive baskets by the Quakers to finish the quarter gave Princeton a 15-12 advantage following 10 minutes. Â

A 9-2 sprint as the second quarter started from the Tigers (24-16) led to a Quakers timeout. This time, Penn snagged seven straight to close within one, 24-23, at the 4:09 mark. A 5-0 run to wrap up the stanza by Penn gave head coach Courtney Banghart's team a 33-31 advantage at the break.

Princeton started off the second half with 10 straight points and 12 of the first 14, extending its advantage to 12 (45-33). The Quakers made another push, outscoring the Tigers by eight in the second portion of the stanza to get as close as four, 50-46, as the fourth stanza got started.
With 5:43 remaining in the game, Phoebe Sterba hit a three-pointer get the Penn deficit to seven (58-51).

The Quakers would not score another basket after that.

On the next possession, Littlefield hit a three-pointer and was fouled. She completed the four-point play to get the score back to double-digits (62-51).

The Quakers missed their final five shots and turn the ball over four times after Sterba's three-pointer.

Princeton has won six-in-a-row and sits 16-9 overall while Penn fell to 18-5 this season. The Tigers will welcome Dartmouth (Mar. 1) and Harvard (Mar. 2) to Jadwin Gym to conclude the home portion of the 2018-19 schedule. Tip-off for the Dartmouth is set for 6 p.m., while the Harvard game will get underway at 5 p.m. Prior to the game vs. Harvard, the Tigers will honor its three seniors, Qalea Ismail, Jordan and Rush.
