Tigers Split Season-Opening Day in Virginia
February 24, 2019 | Softball
An 8-0, five-inning win over Wright State and a 3-0 loss to Bucknell started the 2019 season for the Princeton softball team at a Liberty-hosted tournament in Lynchburg, Va.
The Tigers will wrap the weekend Sunday with a 10:30 a.m. game against Valparaiso (live stats) and a 2:30 p.m. game against host Liberty (live stats).
Princeton's game against Wright State began Friday but was suspended until Saturday night due to rain. Princeton resumed the game with a 3-0 lead that included a home run by rookie Haley Hoffman in her first collegiate at-bat. In Saturday's portion, a five-run third inning that included two walks, two errors, three wild pitches, a passed ball and a base hit put the game in run-rule territory for the Tigers, and pitcher Allie Reynolds closed out the three-hit, three-walk, seven-strikeout shutout.
Against Bucknell, Princeton managed four hits against the Bucknell pitching duo of Lauren Lichtenwalner and Raeanne Geffert. The Tigers' best scoring chance came in the fourth when Ali Blanchard had a two-out double to put runners on second and third, but Princeton stranded the runners. Blanchard, also the Tiger pitcher, took a shutout into the fifth before Bucknell broke through with two runs on three hits and a sacrifice fly.
