Stanford Edges Princeton 5-4 To Finish Third
February 24, 2019 | Women's Squash
An injury to Raneem El Torky and a heartbreaking 14-12 loss in the fifth and decisive game at the #1 position sent Princeton to a tough 5-4 loss to Stanford in the Howe Cup third-place match Sunday at Trinity.
Princeton got victories from the senior duo of Isabel Hirshberg and Samantha Chai, both of whom were competing in their final team matches for the Tigers. Hirshberg capped a perfect 3-0 weekend by grabbing the Tigers' first win, while Chai allowed only 11 points in her win at #5.
Sophomore Emme Leonard won a pair of tough games to grab a 3-1 win at #6, and freshman Andrea Toth capped her impressive debut season with a 3-1 win at #8.
The Cardinal was able to even the match during the second shift; following a 3-2 comeback win at the #8 spot, Casey Wong claimed a win at #2 when El Torky suffered an injury and was forced to retire. A Stanford win at #4 left all eyes on the #1 match, where Elena Wagenmans won a 14-12 thriller over Bubble Lui to clinch the win.
The top players will be in competition this weekend at Brown for the CSA individual championship and All-America honors.
