March 02, 2019 | Baseball
FAIRFAX, Va. – Robert H.B. Baldwin '42 Head Coach of Baseball Scott Bradley picked up his 400th career victory as the Princeton Tigers earned a split vs. the George Mason Patriots at Spuhler Field on Saturday afternoon.
Princeton 5, George Mason 3 – Game 1
Max West led off the second stanza with a double and moved to third base on a single from Max Machiorlette. Jake Boone brought in the Tigers' first run of the season with a knock to left field. A fielders' choice tacked on to Princeton's lead before Nadir Lewis' first career RBI made it 3-0.
A wild pitch in the bottom of the third gave the Patriots a run. Ryan Smith was sparkling as he retired eight in a row and 11-of-13 between the third and seventh frames. He produced another 1-2-3 outing in the eighth. Boone added on to Princeton's advantage with a two-run double in the fifth.
George Mason threatened in its last at-bat, loading the bases with one out. A hit-by-pitch gave the home unit its second tally. A wild pitch got George Mason within two, but Conor Nolan secured the save with a strikeout to end the game.
Chris Davis and Boone had three hits each while Lewis and West contributed multi-hit performances. Smith struck out 10 in six relief innings to nab the win. Princeton pitchers punched out 14 hitters and allowed just one hit.
George Mason 6, Princeton 0 – Game 2
The Patriots quickly got on the board with two in their first at-bat on a wild pitch and RBI groundout. They expanded their lead on a run-producing double and RBI hit in the second inning to make it 4-0. The Patriots put up single-runs in the third and eighth frames to finish off the scoring for them.
Princeton's best scoring threat came in the fourth stanza with two runners in scoring position, but a lineout ended the frame.
Andrew Gnazzo threw 5 2/3 innings, striking out four and scattering three hits. West, David Harding and Boone had two hits each.
These two squads will face off in the series finale tomorrow (Mar. 2). First pitch is set for 11 a.m.
