Top-10 Trio Meet On Lake Carnegie As Tiger Women Open Season In Class Of 1987 Trophy Regatta

It would be easy for senior Sadie McGirr and the rest of the eighth-ranked Princeton open women to focus on the biggest, most spectacular goals right now. It also wouldn't be the way Princeton has achieved so much recent success in the first place.
The three-time reigning Ivy League champion Princeton Tigers open their 2019 season this Saturday morning against both #6 Ohio State and #10 Brown in the annual Class of 1987 Trophy regatta. The race will be streamed live on ESPN+ (see link above); that race is part of the only full morning of Tiger rowing this spring, as all four teams will be in competition at Princeton.
The Brown-Princeton rivalry is one of the Ivy's best and most competitive; Brown has won three of the last five Class of 1987 Trophies, though Princeton currently holds it after winning the last two years. These teams are also annually among the top Ivy finishers at the NCAA Championships, as well as among the top contenders for the Ivy title. But those races are months away, and McGirr's focus is on the more immediate goals.
"Every time we race, we are focused on going as fast as we can," said McGirr, a member of the Ivy champion 1V last season. "Even every day at practice we are trying to see how much speed we can gain. Setting smaller incremental goals helps to break it down to more immediate goals and take things day by day, rather than focusing on a race that is three months away."
Those goals aren't limited to the actual racing season. After winning the Princeton Chase last fall, the Tigers put in significant work up and down the roster in the winter.
"One big focus over the winter was seeing improvement throughout the team," McGirr said. "Erg averages across the team were dropping like crazy. This year, I think we have the deepest team that I've seen over the past four years. One change from past years is that the automatic qualifier for NCAAs is the winner of the team points at Ivies instead of just the winner of the 1V, so having depth throughout the team will be even more important than it has been in the past. Every single member of the team is pushing for that Ivy championship."
Princeton will see all of its Ivy rivals on Lake Carnegie this season, especially next weekend when the Tigers host the Ivy Invitational on Sunday. Princeton will host every regular season race this season; all Tiger home races this season are set to stream live on ESPN+; if you are not a subscriber yet, you can do so here.
