8th-Ranked Princeton Retains Class Of 1987 Trophy Against #6 Ohio State, #10 Brown
March 30, 2019 | Women's Rowing - Open
The reigning Ivy League champion Princeton varsity eight put together a highly impressive opening performance Saturday morning during a full morning of home racing on Lake Carnegie. In a battle of Top-10 teams, the Princeton 1V defeated Brown by 3.5 seconds to retain the Class of 1987 Trophy, while Ohio State placed third by only .2 of a second behind the Bears.
Each of the teams won a race among the top three. Ohio State claimed the 2V by 5.7 seconds over Princeton, while the Brown V4A edged Princeton by 2.4 seconds for the win. Princeton finished either first or second in each of the top four races.
Princeton claimed the Class of 1987 Trophy for the third straight year and the 21st time overall with a strong effort in a slight tailwind. The Tigers defended Lake Carnegie with a strong performance against a pair of boats that should remain among the top boats in the nation throughout the season.
"We were super pleased with the race this morning," senior Claire Collins said. "They were tough competitors but we really stepped up and started the season off on the right foot. We had a great shift down to our base after the start of the race that gave us a lot of confidence. And our sprint was good as well. We have areas to improve and we are taking it day by day but it is a good place to start."
"In speedy conditions, the Princeton 1V did a nice job in a hard-fought race," head coach Lori Dauphiny said. "We are excited about the start to the season and look forward to making progress and racing next weekend in the Ivy Invite. Our league looks strong."
This race gave Princeton an early look at a pair of boats that will be challengers for Princeton's Ivy and/or NCAA goals. With several veterans in the boat, including three-time Ivy champions Collins and Emily Kallfelz, the Tigers are excited to build speed to put themselves in position to challenge the best in the country in May and June.
"I am very excited to build more speed with this crew and this team," Collins said. "We have worked hard and we believe in each other. Many of us have rowed with each other for years now and those shared experiences are valuable to our goals and work this season. I don't think there is a ceiling for this boat. We are ready to keep pushing up. I will also say I am proud of this team for racing hard today and we are excited as a team."
