5th-Ranked Tigers Retain 1975 Cup, 1984 Plaque During Successful Day At Ivy League Invitational
April 07, 2019 | Women's Rowing - Open
The fifth-ranked Princeton open rowing team couldn't have asked for much more from its performance at the 2019 Ivy League Invitational, held Sunday on the Tigers' own Lake Carnegie. The undefeated varsity eight moved to 7-0 on the season and retained both the Class of 1984 Plaque and the 1975 Cup against a quartet of Ivy League opponents, while the full Tiger squad went a combined 21-1 in an early tune-up for next month's Ivy League Championships.
Princeton opened the day with the Class of 1984 Plaque Regatta, which is the only traditional Ivy League race that follows a team point format. Harvard-Radcliffe joined the field of Princeton, Penn and Dartmouth that competed for the Plaque, which the Tigers won by topping its two series rivals in the 1V, 2V and V4A races. Princeton diid get a challenge from Harvard in both the top eight races; the Tigers topped the Crimson by 3.7 seconds in the 1V event, while the Crimson won the 2V race by 6.2 seconds. Those two races left fans anticipating the afternoon rematch, where those two would join Cornell in the annual Class of 1975 Cup regatta.
The Tigers came out firing in the afternoon and retained the 1975 Cup with a victory of more than 12 seconds over Harvard. The 2V avenged its earlier loss by winning by more than three seconds, while the fours and the third varsity eight posted comfortable margins in their own wins.
This will be the only day of double racing until the Ivy League Championships on May 19, which will be held at Cooper River in Pennsauken, N.J. The Tigers will be off next weekend, and then will host Yale for the Eisenberg Cup on April 20 in a race that will be streamed live on ESPN+.
