Heavyweights Show Promise In Season-Opening Win Over Georgetown
March 30, 2019 | Heavyweight Rowing
A talented Princeton heavyweight rowing team with the highest of aspirations opened its season Saturday morning in impressive fashion, as the Tigers defeated Georgetown to open a full morning of home racing on Lake Carnegie.
This was the 11th annual opener between Princeton and Georgetown. The event was started with the official 2K and was followed by several shorter pieces between all of the crews in the morning and then again in the afternoon.
The opener was the 1V showdown, which Princeton won by nearly 15 seconds in a time of 5:47.9. In the second race, Princeton had its 2V, 3V and 4V post wins over the Georgetown 2V; the closest margin was between the Tiger 2V and 3V, which was only 1.7 seconds — a testament to the depth of talent the Tigers have in some of their top boats.
"It was a solid start for our squad and it is great to finally have the season under way," head coach Greg Hughes said. "It's a positive way to get the year started and it gives us a good sense of the work we need to do over the next week as we gear up for the next one."
Princeton will return to Lake Carnegie next weekend to host the Midshipmen for the Navy-Princeton Rowing Cup.
