Heavyweights Retain Navy-Princeton Cup Before Heading Into Ivy League Season
April 06, 2019 | Heavyweight Rowing
The Tiger heavyweights retained the Navy-Princeton Rowing Cup, one of the oldest trophies in the sport, during another strong morning on Lake Carnegie. Princeton took four of five races on the day, including the 1V matchup by more than 10 seconds.
Princeton, which opened its season last weekend with a victory over Georgetown, was able to push away from Navy fairly early and open a length lead before the midway point of the race.
"Overall we were very pleased with the race," senior Jim Palmer said. "Coming off last week we felt like there was a lot we could improve on, so it felt good to make progress today. In particular we focused on being able to continue pressing our advantage without coming off the gas in the middle of the race. There was a moment about 700 meters in today when we briefly stopped moving away from Navy. And we just said to ourselves, 'We're sitting. We're sitting. Why are we sitting?' And then we stepped back into it with renewed vigor. The aggression from that move carried all the way through to the finish."
Princeton won each of the top four races, including a 2V victory by six seconds over the Midshipmen. Both the 3V and 4V won by more than 10 seconds, while the Navy 5V earned a win by 3.1 seconds.
The Tigers, which have a fusion of both experience and youth in the top boat, improved to 2-0 on the young season and will now turn their attention to the Ivy League season, which starts next weekend at Columbia in the annual Childs Cup regatta; the Childs Cup actually is the oldest trophy in the sport.
"Cup racing may not be the thing that defines our whole season, but as a team we get almost as excited to line up for these April duals as we do to line up in May or June," Palmer said. "All the history around these races and having the chance to test our speed early in the season is really exciting, and we love it."
