Princeton Enters Ivy League Season With Historic Childs Cup Regatta At Overpeck Park
April 11, 2019 | Heavyweight Rowing
CHILDS CUP HISTORY l NATIONAL POLL
Ivy League rowing is filled with historic rivalries, which often compete for historic trophies.
No trophy, though, has been around as long as the one that will be up for grabs Saturday at Overpeck Park.
The Childs Cup has been the prize for every Princeton-Penn-Columbia heavyweight race since those three boats met on the Schuylkill River in 1879, and it will be the prize again Saturday morning when the seventh-ranked Tigers face #12 Penn and #16 Columbia on Lake Overpeck in Princeton's Ivy League debut.
The Tigers enter the weekend with a 2-0 record following wins over both Georgetown and Columbia, and they now enter a historic portion of the season, as well as one that will test them significantly heading into Sprints and the IRA Championships down the road.
"Cup racing may not be the thing that defines our whole season, but as a team we get almost as excited to line up for these April duals as we do to line up in May or June," senior Jim Palmer said after the Tigers retained the Navy-Princeton Rowing Cup last weekend. "All the history around these races and having the chance to test our speed early in the season is really exciting, and we love it."
Princeton leads the all-time series with 50 wins, including each of the last nine, while Penn has won 44 and Columbia has won 12. Saturday will be the first of four straight Ivy League Cup races, including two at home (April 20, Harvard, Compton Cup and May 4, Brown, Content Cup).
This weekend will also be a good test for the lower boats; the 2V, 3V and 4V has each gotten off to an unblemished start this season, while the 5V dropped a tight race to Navy.
