UNCG Holds Off Princeton, 3-2
March 08, 2019 | Baseball
GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Princeton Tigers got the game-tying run in scoring position in the ninth inning, but the UNCG Spartans held on for a 3-2 win at UNCG Baseball Stadium on Friday afternoon.
With one out in the ninth, Jake Boone doubled down the left line. Two batters later, Joseph Flynn was hit by a pitch, but a groundout ended the Tigers' threat.
The Spartans led off the contest in the first by getting the first two batters on base, but Ryan Smith got a strikeout and picked off a runner to finish the frame. A throwing error in the bottom of the third stanza got the home team on the board.
David Harding hit the Tigers' first home run of the season with a blast to left field in the top of the fifth inning. Ryan Caveness answered for UNCG in the sixth with a lead-off four-bagger. A wild pitch allowed the Spartans to tack off an insurance tally in their next at-bat. An RBI groundout in the next half stanza from Max Machiorlette cut Princeton's deficit to one, 3-2, before the ninth inning threat.
Taylor Beckett had two hits for the Tigers' offense while other players had hits. Smith struck out six in six innings of work. He has 16 strikeouts in his two appearances so far. Princeton and UNCG will battle in a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. tomorrow (Mar. 9).
