Tigers Win Series Over Penn, Split Saturday Pair
April 13, 2019 | Softball
Fourteen innings were on the docket for Saturday, and 14 innings were what the Princeton softball team got. The Tigers just didn't expect to get there the way they did.
Saturday's first game saw Penn and Princeton trade zeroes for eight innings while leaving a combined 13 runners on base before Princeton got the game's only run in the ninth. A Keeley Walsh single, a Mackenzie Meyer single, an Alex Colón sacrifice and a Kaitlyn Waslawski sacrifice fly got the Tigers that run before Ali Blanchard dealt a perfect ninth to finish off a 1-0 win on three hits, four walks and seven Ks. It was Princeton's longest game in 364 days, since a 2-1, 11-inning win at Yale on April 14, 2018.
Blanchard's shutout was her second consecutive, along with a seven-inning shutout tossed last week at the Class of 1895 Field against Brown.Â
Game two saw another tie early, with each team scoring a run in the first inning before Penn exploded for 13 runs between the third and fourth to take a 13-run lead. Kaylee Grant took advantage of a single and two walks that loaded the bases to hit a grand slam, but the Quakers still ended it early, 14-5. The grand slam was Princeton's first since Emily Viggers '16 hit one against Cornell on April 30, 2016.
Princeton entered the day in first place atop a crowded top half of the Ivy League and will host Lehigh Wednesday for a 3 p.m. doubleheader before Ivy play returns Saturday and Sunday at '95 Field against Harvard.
