Monmouth Tops Softball Team in Non-Conference Finale
April 23, 2019 | Softball
The regular-season non-conference finale for the Princeton softball team went to Monmouth, 8-0 in five innings Tuesday afternoon in West Long Branch.
Monmouth pitcher Alyssa Irons took a no-hitter into the fifth inning only to see Mackenzie Meyer break it up with a base hit. A double play erased her from the basepaths, and a second-inning error that let Meyer on and a fifth-inning error that put Haley Hoffman on were Princeton's only other baserunners. Irons fanned eight in the complete-game effort, walking none.
Monmouth used a hit batter, two walks and an Amber Wozniak two-run single to take a 2-0 lead in the first, and a walk, two doubles and a single pushed the lead to 5-0 in the second. Lindsey Baron, Kayla Rosado and Wozniak all drove in runs in the inning.Â
Riley Wilkinson quieted the Hawks in the third and fourth innings, giving up just a single over those two frames, but a walk, two base hits, an error and a sacrifice fly in the fifth allowed Monmouth to end the game early with Katie Harrington and Erika Coreth driving in runs in that inning.
The Tigers will return to Ivy League play for two Saturday and one Sunday at Cornell. Princeton is two games out of first in the Ivy with six games left.
