No. 2 Princeton Wins Thriller At Lake Carnegie Over No. 5 Yale
April 27, 2019 | Men's Rowing - Lightweight
One for the history books.
Senior Day.
Last race for the Class of 2019 (Jordi Cabanas, Daniel Chao, William Hess, Danny Hogan, Christian Kelling, Gregory Kernisan, Matthew McGhee, Shea Minter, Ricky Swanton, Clayton Travis) at Lake Carnegie.
A rally for the Goldthwait Cup?
A perfect way to send off the seniors.
The No. 2 men's lightweight rowing team won a thriller, crossing the finish line two-tenths of a second ahead of the No. 5 Yale Bulldogs on Saturday morning at Lake Carnegie.
With the win, Princeton (5:58.0) held on to the Goldthwait Cup over Yale (5:58.2) and No. 4 Harvard (6:11.1). It's the closest margin in a Princeton contest since the Tigers dropped a heartbreaker to Columbia by one-tenth of a second in Apr. of 2014.
"I'm ecstatic about the way the 1VL rowed despite being so far down early in the race," said head coach Marty Crotty. "I'm so happy that the seniors could race their last race on Carnegie like this. Anybody in the race or watching will be taking about this one for the next 100 years."
In the 2V event, the Bulldogs (6:02.1) secured a 2.6-second victory over Princeton (6:04.7) while Harvard was third (6:06.0). Yale also took home the 3V8 (6:22.2) and 4V8+ (6:02.2). Harvard won at 5V4+ over Yale.
Yale and its three victories took home the Vogel Cup (35 points) over Princeton (31) and Harvard (26). The Tigers will now take a two-week break before the Eastern Sprints on May 19.
