Cornell Takes Series Finale in Seventh
April 28, 2019 | Softball
A three-run homer in the seventh inning turned Sunday's series finale at Cornell into a walk-off winner for the Big Red.
Princeton stands three games back of Ivy co-leaders Harvard and Columbia with three to play, and with the Tigers able to max out at 13 league wins, even if Harvard and Columbia each lost out next week, those two teams have the most wins among the four-team tie that would result if Harvard and Columbia lost out and Princeton won out, with Penn already done with 13 wins. The Crimson and Lions each have five wins among that group and the Quakers and Tigers each have four, which would send those two to the Ivy League Playoff Series.
Princeton will wrap the season at Dartmouth with three games next weekend.
The Tigers built the lead beginning in the second inning, when Keeley Walsh doubled, Kaitlyn Waslawski tripled, and three batters after Waslawski, Alex Viscusi put down a squeeze bunt to score Waslawski for a 2-0 lead.Â
Cornell cut it to 2-1 in the third when two singles and two walks forced in a run, but the Tigers got the run right back in the top of the fourth. Waslawski had a one-out single and stole second and Hannah Lutz singled her home to restore the two-run lead at 3-1.
That's where it stood until the last of the seventh, when a leadoff Miranda Lawson double and an Emily McKinney one-out single put two runners on for cleanup hitter Bridgette Rooney, whose three-run homer delivered the win for the Big Red.
