Columbia Holds Off Princeton, 2-1
April 07, 2019 | Baseball
PRINCETON, N.J. – Despite an eight-strikeout, complete game performance from Andrew Gnazzo, the Columbia Lions held off the Princeton Tigers, 2-1, at Clarke Field on Sunday afternoon.
Max West extended his hitting streak to nine games with three knocks. It was Gnazzo's first career complete game as he scattered 11 hits in the tough luck loss.
Princeton put a runner on third base with less than two outs in the second, third and eighth innings, but couldn't push him home.
Columbia's two runs in came in the fifth frame on a RBI double by Chandler Bengtson and run-producing knock from Liam McGill with two out. Joseph Flynn's bases-loaded walk with two out in the sixth stanza provided the Tigers' only run in the sixth.
In the Tigers' last chance in the ninth, Nadir Lewis' fly out just missed going out, falling short on the warning track before another flyout finished off the contest.
Joe Engel had three hits for Columbia while Ben Wereski earned the victory with 5 2/3 innings of work, punching out seven hitters.
Princeton drops to 6-18 this season and 3-6 in the Ivy League while Columbia improves to 10-14 overall and 6-3 in the conference. The Tigers will take on Seton Hall on Wednesday (Apr. 10) at Clarke Field (3 p.m.).
