Tigers Complete Series Sweep of Brown to Keep Pace in Ivy Race
April 07, 2019 | Softball
The race for the two Ivy League Championship Series positions is a crowded one after the first weekend of April, but the Princeton softball team did its part to keep pace by completing a weekend series sweep of Brown Sunday in Providence.
The Tigers were just an inning away from shutting out Brown for the weekend in what would have been Princeton's first run of three consecutive shutouts since 2006, but a Madi Cranford seventh-inning home run for the Bears made it a 6-1 final.
Princeton scored early, using a leadoff Megan Donahey single and an Allison Harvey RBI-double to put a run on the board in the first inning. The Tigers broke it open in the third, using an error, two hits, two walks and a hit batter to score three more runs for a 4-0 lead with Keeley Walsh hitting a two-run single and Gianna Mavica drawing a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch.Â
The lead became 5-0 in the fifth when Mackenzie Meyer led off with a solo shot for her second home run of the year, and hits from Harvey and Meyer put two on four Kaitlyn Waslawski to double home a run for a 6-0 lead in the seventh.
A day after she opened the series with a 1-0 shutout win, Allie Reynolds went the distance again to get the victory, giving up just the one run on four hits and a walk while striking out three to help Princeton complete the series sweep.
The Tigers will skip a midweeker this week and return to Ivy play with a Friday-Sunday series at Penn.
With the Ivy League weekend in the books, Penn is atop the league at 8-4, followed Princeton, Harvard and Columbia all a half-game back at 6-3 with Yale one game back of the Quakers at 7-5. Yale and Penn started the league season a week before the rest of the league and have played three more games than the other six teams.
