Princeton Advances with 19-7 Win Over Wagner in NCAA Tournament
May 10, 2019 | Women's Lacrosse
The rainbow that appeared after the between-games showers wasn't the only pretty sight on Sherrerd Field Friday night.
Â
The Princeton women's lacrosse team was dominant from the start of its NCAA tournament first round game against Wagner, playing a nearly flawless first half to build a 10-goal lead en route to a 19-7 win over the Northeast Conference champs. The win was Princeton's 10th on the season and snapped Wagner's seven-game run.
Â
Princeton's 14-4 halftime lead came after an opening 30 minutes that saw the Tigers outshoot Wagner 29-10 and turn it over only three times to the 13 that the Seahawks did. Princeton was perfect clearing the ball for the night, including 10 for 10 in the first half, while Wagner had six first-half failed clears against the relentless Princeton ride.
Â
"It was great to come out and take control and get a win," said Princeton head coach Chris Sailer. "No NCAA game is ever easy. Wagner is an outstanding team. We saw them on film and they were very impressive on both ends of the field. We wanted to get out to a fast start, and we were able to do that."
Â
The win also advanced Princeton to the second round Sunday at 1 p.m., also on Sherrred Field, against Loyola, who was equally as impressive in defeating Richmond 19-6 in Friday's first game. The winner of that game advances to next weekend's quarterfinals.
Â
After the Greyhounds finished off Richmond and the teams for Game 2 started to warm up, there was a quick, but heavy rain, which then gave way to a rainbow that loomed over the opening draw of the Princeton-Wagner game. By the time the rainbow vanished Princeton had built that 14-4 lead at the break.
Â
Tess D'Orsi led the way for the Tigers, scoring a career-high seven goals and adding an assist for an eight-point night.
Â
Princeton had eight different players score in the game, including a three-goal night from Kathryn Hallett. Kyla Sears had two goals and two assists, and Allie Rogers and Izzy Mangan had two goals each as well.
Â
Elizabeth George had a goal, two assists and six draw controls, while Nonie Anderson had seven draw controls and a caused turnover.
Â
Sam Fish made nine saves in goal for Princeton, and Wagner's Kelsey Fee had a great game, with 15 saves.
Â

Princeton is making its 27th NCAA tournament appearance.
