Three to Compete at NCAA Track & Field Championships

Three Tigers will compete this week, June 5-8, at the 2019 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Austin, Texas.
Junior Joey Daniels is the first Princeton athlete to reach the NCAA Championships in the 110-meter hurdles. He is the fourth athlete in Ivy League history to reach the final in the event and the first since 1960. The semifinal will be Wednesday, June 5 at 5:02 p.m. (CT) with the top 2 from each of three heats plus the next best two advance to the final, on Friday at 8:12 p.m.
Last year's national champion Grant Holloway (Florida) returns to defend his title and has the nation's best time at 13.07, along with Daniel Roberts (Kentucky). Four others from last year's final are back as well: Damion Thomas (LSU) and Luke Siehoff (Nebraska), Jaylan McConico (Iowa) and Amere Lattin (Houston). Daniels will race in heat 1 along with Roberts and McConico with the race airing on ESPN2.
Sophomore Ed Trippas makes his debut at the NCAA Outdoor Championship, qualifying in the steeplechase. This will be his second NCAA Championship this season, after competing in the Cross Country Championship this past November. Trippas will be in heat 1 of the steeplechase semifinal on Wednesday, June 5 at 4:32 p.m. (CT) which will be aired live on ESPN2. The top five from each heat plus the next two fastest time will make up the 12 that will compete in the final on Friday, June 7 at 7:54 p.m. (CT).
Five of last year's competitors return including defending national champion Obsa Ali (Minnesota) who has the second fastest time in the nation this year. Ryan Smeeton (Oklahoma State) boasts the top time at 8:27.90. Others from the 2018 final are Steven Fahy (Stanford) who was third), Clayson Shumway (BYU) who was seventh and John Rice (Texas) who was 12th. Matt Owens (BYU) who was sixth last year has the third best time at 8:32.59.
Trippas ranks fourth in the nation with an 8:33.90 that won him the event at the NCAA East Regional. His time was a personal best, the second in Princeton history and third best in Ivy League history. He had an incredible finish to the race besting Daniel Michalski (Indiana) who was the favorite heading into the meet and now ranks fifth behind Trippas on the descending order list with an 8:34.26.
Sophomore Obiageri Amaechi makes her return in the discus. She will throw first in the first flight on Saturday, June 8 at 5:05 p.m. (CT). The top nine throwers, out of the 24, after three rounds advance of both flights will receive three additional throws. Ten of the 24 finalists form last year return, including four from the top nine. The 2017 champion and 2018 runner-up Shadae Lawrence (Colorado State, transfer from Kansas State) and has the top mark in the nation this season with a 65.05. Others back from the top nine last year besides Amaechi, are Laulauga Tausaga (Iowa) who was fourth and Gabi Jacobs (Missouri) who was fifth. Tausaga has the second best mark in the nation this season, followed by Shanice Love (Florida State) was was 14th last year and Abigaile Wilson (UCLA) who was 20th. Last year Amaechi made the podium with a seventh-place finish hitting 54.16.
Amaechi qualified with a seventh-place finish at NCAA East Regional with a 53.62. She reset her own personal best – which is also the Princeton record and Ivy League record – four times this season. Her best throw is a 57.95 that won her the Ivy League title.
