September 14, 2019 | Women's Volleyball
COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The Princeton Tigers collected a split during day two of the Maryland Tournament.
Princeton 3, Arkansas 0
The Tigers began the contest with seven of the first 10 points. A 5-1 push later put Princeton ahead, 16-10, leading to an Arkansas timeout. The Razorbacks never threatened the rest of the frame as the Tigers earned a 25-18 win.
In set two, Princeton ran off four of five points to jump ahead, 13-8, forcing an Arkansas pause. The Tigers held the Razorbacks at bay until a 4-1 stretch set the score at 22-20. A kill by Elena Montgomery stemmed the streak before Devon Peterkin's blast gave Princeton a 25-21 decision.
Arkansas saw its first lead in set three at 5-4, but Princeton collected five of six to go in front, 9-6. Another streak of five consecutive tallies extended the Tigers' advantage to six, 15-9. The SEC team got within three, but couldn't get any closer as a kill by Oliva Schewe sewed up a sweep for the Tigers.
Montgomery corralled a double-double with a team-best 13 kills along with 15 digs. Cameron Dames added 17 digs while Peterkin contributed 11 kills in the victory.
Maryland 3, Princeton 2
The Maryland Terrapins rallied, down two sets to one, to defeat Princeton, 3-2 (26-24, 23-25, 22-25, 25-20, 15-9).
The largest separation of the first set was a Maryland four-point (14-10) lead that Princeton quickly matched. No team led by more than three the rest of the way. Maryland was serving for the victory, but an error tied the match at 24-all. A kill and an attack error gave the Terrapins a 26-24 win.
Evened at 21-all in set two, a service error and kill from Peterkin forced a Maryland timeout. The Terrapins couldn't find the equalizer as another tally from the senior captain tied contest at one set a piece.
A 9-3 push by Princeton in third stanza extended their advantage to six, 16-10. The Terrapins roared back to eventually tie the set at 21-all, but Princeton scored four of the last five points to wrap up the frame.
Down 21-15, three consecutive points from Princeton made Maryland call timeout in set four. The Terrapins kept the Tigers at bay and extended the match to a fifth and deciding set.
This time, it was a Princeton rally as head coach Sabrina King's group snapped off four points in a row, tying the score at 8-all. The Terrapins closed with a fury with seven of the next eight to collect the victory.
Montgomery (23) and Peterkin (17) combined for 40 kills while Harris dropped in 53 assists in the loss.
