No. 14 Oregon Escapes With Five-Set Victory Over Princeton
September 17, 2019 | Women's Volleyball
PRINCETON, N.J. – The No. 14 Oregon Ducks escaped with a five-set victory (23-25, 25-22, 24-26, 25-15, 18-16) over the Princeton Tigers at Dillon Gym on Tuesday night.
The Ducks showed why they are one of the best in the country, rallying with three straight points to take the final set, 18-16, get out of Dillon with the win.
Maggie O'Connell had 23 kills to pace the Tigers' offense along with a .444 hitting percentage. Elena Montgomery (18) and Devon Peterkin (13) combined for 31 kills while Jessie Harris added 51 assists.
Princeton had the first separation of the match in set one with five consecutive points to take a 10-4 lead, but Oregon roared back to cut its deficit to one, 11-10. A service ace by Clare Lenihan kept the Ducks at bay, extending the home squad's advantage to five, 18-13, later in the frame. Oregon however went on to narrow its deficit to 23-22 before Montgomery's blast sent Dillon Gym into a frenzy and gave Princeton the 25-23 win.
Oregon led throughout the second set before a kill by O'Connell and ace from Peterkin forced the road unit to call time holding onto just a two-point lead, 23-21. The Ducks closed out the stanza on a 3-1 run to take the 25-22 decision.
Set three was a tight affair as neither team led by more than three points. The Ducks found themselves ahead, 23-20, but two attack errors and an ace from Lenihan tied the non-conference meeting. Princeton, later, faced set point, but got a kill from Peterkin and an attack error to flip the script.
If Dillon was in a frenzy before … O'Connell's kill to put the Tigers up two sets to one … only added to it.
The Tigers held a two-point lead on three separate occasions in set five before the Ducks tied the game at 8-all. After exchanging points, Princeton registered three of the next four tallies, forcing Oregon to call timeout, down 12-10. The stoppage didn't stop Lauren Flaming as she recorded an ace to make the score, 13-10. The Ducks evened the game three more times before its last rally.
Princeton will continue this week at the Villanova Tournament. The Tigers take on Temple on Friday (7 p.m.) and La Salle on Saturday (4:30 p.m.).
