PRINCETON, N.J. – Bill Manning, a very familiar face at the Shea Rowing Center has been named the assistant coach and recruiting coordinator for the women's rowing squad, head coach Lori Dauphiny announced.
"He is no stranger to the Princeton boathouse," said Dauphiny. "We look forward to benefiting from his knowledge, his love for rowing and years of wisdom."
Manning just wrapped up his sixth season with Princeton Rowing in 2019. The 2020 campaign will be his first as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator with the rowing team after spending the previous six years with the men's lightweight squad. During the season, his coaching is focused on the Fours.
Some of the highlights from his time with the men's lightweight team include silver medals for the 1V at the 2018 and 2019 IRA National Championships, winning the H/Y/P Regatta four times, winning the Eastern Sprints with 3V and 4V in 2016 and 2018, medaling at the IRAs with the LM4- and LM4+ for three consecutive years, including a national championship in 2015; and seeing the team's continued improvement in the Jope Cup standings.
Manning also coaches internationally for US Rowing. In 2019, he coached the U-23 LM4x to fourth at the World Championships. For three years, he also helped the U-19 women's squad where his crews won two bronze medals at the World Championships. In 2015, he led the LM2- to a fifth-place finish at Senior Worlds, the best performance by the United States in over a decade. That same summer, his LM4- won silver, his M2- took bronze, and he co-coached the bronze medal-winning M8+ at the Pan American Games.
In 2003-04, Manning and Dauphiny coached together on the U.S. Senior National and Olympic Teams. He helped the M2- to Olympic qualification in 2003 and at the 2004 Olympic Games assisted with the M2-, M2x, & LM2x. In 2006-07, he directed the U-23 Men's Sculling program for the United States."
From 2011-2013, Manning worked for Harry Parker as the associate head coach of Harvard. In both years, Harvard won the Rowe Cup at the Eastern Sprints and swept Yale. The 1V also won the Eastern Sprints and Ivy League Championship in 2013. Additionally, they medaled at the IRA Championships (bronze in 2012, silver in 2013) twice. At the Henley Royal Regatta, Harvard's crews won the Prince Albert Cup (2011), Ladies' Challenge Plate (2012) and Visitor's Challenge Cup (2013). In both 2001 and 2002 Manning's crews won the Temple Challenge Cup at Henley."
Manning began as Parker's freshman coach, winning Eastern Sprints medals in twelve of his thirteen years, including seven victories. The freshman also raced at the IRAs from 2003-11 winning three silvers and three bronzes. Manning's 1F did not lose a dual race in his final five seasons. They defeated 35 straight opponents between 2007-11. The freshmen also defeated Yale in The Race in eleven of Manning's thirteen years. Additionally, in 2004, he took Harvard to the Lucerne World Cup where they raced as USA-2, defeated the British and French Olympic crews, and made the A Final.
Manning is a Faculty Fellow at Princeton's Whitman College. He earned an Ed.M. from Harvard and an AB from the College of the Holy Cross. He began rowing at Phillips Exeter Academy.
