Princeton Battles No. 21 Rutgers to Draw
September 07, 2019 | Women's Soccer
Princeton's most-played non-conference rivalry was quiet for four years, and the Tigers and Rutgers made up for it in one night.
Battling for 110 minutes in a thriller that ended in a 0-0 draw, Princeton was the first team to keep the 21st-ranked Scarlet Knights from getting a win on the 2019 season, though Rutgers avoided falling to Princeton for the first time since 2007. The teams played since then in 2009 and 2010, and then annually from 2013-15, with Rutgers winning each time.
It was clear from the start, though, that Saturday night at Roberts Stadium was going to be different. Princeton controlled possession early and ended regulation with an 11-4 shot advantage overall and 5-2 on goal. Rutgers had the only two on-goal tries of the extra 20 minutes, outshooting Princeton 6-3 in extra time.
Princeton improved to 2-1-1 with the draw, ending a three-game homestand that included an ACC (Boston College) and Big Ten opponent. The Tigers will head on the road for a pair around Washington, with Georgetown, currently ranked No. 15 in the nation, hosting Princeton Thursday before the Tigers head to Maryland Sunday.
Postgame Notes
• Rutgers now leads the all-time series 17-10-4. The tie breaks a five-match win streak in the series for Rutgers.
• Princeton senior keeper Natalie Grossi recorded her 28th career shutout, moving within one of Dartmouth alumna Kristin Luckenbill (29) for the Ivy League record.
• The match was the first scoreless tie in the 31-meeting history of the series with Rutgers.
