Men's Hockey Ties #15/16 Harvard, 3-3
January 04, 2020 | Men's Ice Hockey
PRINCETON – After falling behind, 2-0, after twenty minutes of play, the Princeton University hockey team righted the ship with a strong second period en route to a 3-3 tie with No. 15/16 Harvard.
All three of Princeton's goals came on special teams – two on the powerplay and one shorthanded. Harvard also had two power-play goals, including the game-tying goal 6:16 into the third period.
Captain Derek Topatigh had a goal and an assist as did Luke Keenan – each scoring on the powerplay. Sophomore Finn Evans had the third Princeton goal, scoring shorthanded for his first career marker.
Harvard stormed out of the gate, outshooting the Tigers, 13-5, in the first period and taking a 2-0 lead.
The Crimson connected for the first goal 2:52 in, with Colton Kerfoot redirecting a John Farinacci feed at the goalmouth for an early power-play goal.
Harvard doubled its lead with 5:27 remaining in the opening period via Casey Dornbach. He snuck open in the slot and tapped in a Jack Drury pass on a delayed penalty call against the Tigers.
Princeton more than settled in during the second period, scoring a pair of special teams goals to tie the game, 2-2. The shot total in the second was almost the exact opposite of the first as Princeton had a 13-4 advantage in the middle frame, holding Harvard without a 5-on-5 shot in the second period.
Captain Derek Topatigh scored Princeton's first goal of the game, bombing home a power-play goal top corner 3:27 into the second period. Mark Paolini had the primary assist, with Luke Keenan picking up the second helper.
Towards the end of the second period, it was the penalty kill which came through. Topatigh cleared the puck from behind the net, and Finn Evans poked it by a Harvard defenseman at the blue line and was off to the races. One hard cut to the net later, Evans had his first career goal and Princeton was right back in the game.
Princeton took a 3-2 lead 2:30 into the third, again connecting on the powerplay. Keenan slid backdoor and was wide open following a deft backhand pass from Adam Robbins. Kennan's wrister beat Cameron Gornet and Princeton had its first lead.
Harvard would net the game-tying goal 6:16 into the third on a Farinacci power-play goal. Jeremie Forget saved Jack Rathbone's offering from the point, but Farinacci pounced on the rebound and chipped it over a sprawling Forget.
Forget would finish with 26 saves, including two in overtime to secure the point in the standings.
The Tigers venture on the road next weekend, taking on Clarkson (Jan. 10) and St. Lawrence (Jan. 11) in ECAC action. Faceoff for both games is set for 7 p.m.
