Men’s Tennis Outlasts Penn at ECAC Championship, 4-3
February 14, 2020 | Men's Tennis
ITHACA, N.Y. – The Princeton University men's tennis team opened play at the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC) Championship Friday morning and outlasted the University of Pennsylvania, 4-3.
"We escaped today," said head coach Billy Pate. "Penn played a great match and pushed us to the brink. After a slow start in doubles, as well as some of the singles matches, we responded well and fought furiously to get the momentum and eventually an exciting win. Very proud of our resiliency and finding the finish line in a long and physical match. We're certain to have many more of these battles this spring so it's always crucial to embrace the moment and play without fear. Tomorrow will be a challenge against a very good Harvard team and we'll need to be sharp.
Doubles
While the Quakers won the doubles point, Princeton was able to pick up a win at No. 1 thanks to No. 8 Payton Holden and Ryan Seggerman; they defeated Kevin Zhu and Dmitry Shatalin 7-6.
Singles
Princeton was able to battle back in singles, starting off with Will Peters at the No. 5 position who defeated Harsh Parikh 6-4, 6-3. Karl Poling then overcame Edoardo Graziana 6-3, 1-6, 6-4 at No. 1 then Justin Barki grinded out a 6-3, 3-6, 7-5 win over Shatalin at No. 3. Davey Roberts then closed the victory out for the Tigers at No. 6, bouncing back from a loss in the opening set to win 1-6, 7-6, 6-4.
