No. 2 Princeton Wins National Top-Three Battle over Trinity
February 15, 2020 | Women's Squash
Raneem El Torky, Grace Doyle, Morgan Steelman, Emily Rose and India Stephenson provided the wins for the Tigers, with Doyle and Steelman getting their wins in sweeps.
The Tigers will head for Yale next weekend and the CSA team championship.
Head coach Gail Ramsay on the match:
"We had a great win today over Trinity. Trinity is a tough team to play with a lot of strength at the top. We felt we had an advantage in the back half of the lineup. The 5-4 win showed that we could win at the top of the ladder with a key win at number 2 with Raneem El Torky '21 pulling out a five-game win. She was down 1-2 in games and 1-7 in the fourth before she started to move her opponent in the corners with more consistency and limited her own unforced errors. She also became more effective in the front corners with her deception. It was one of her best comebacks this season."
Freshman India Stephenson on the match:
"Today was an unbelievable match. Our team fought with so much heart in every single match, and we couldn't be prouder about how it turned out. I had a slow start but was eventually able to establish my length and control the middle of the court. Once I got comfortable on court, I really dominated the match. The atmosphere on C floor was fantastic. These are the matches that we train so hard for and it is the most rewarding to feel like all the long hours we put in pay off. This is great momentum to carry us into next weekend where we will be fighting for the national title. We are so excited and today proved that we are more than prepared to take on those tough matches. Today was a great day for Princeton women's squash."
Senior Morgan Steelman on the match:
"Today was my last home match at Princeton and the team made it so special. We had a great energy going into the match and I think this allowed me to play one of my best matches of the season. I'm so happy I got to close out my Princeton squash career with a 5-4 win against Trinity."
Junior Raneem El Torky on the match:
"Beating Trinity was definitely the biggest win of our season and I am so proud of how everyone played and fought during their match. I had a really good comeback after being down 2-1 and 7-1 in the fourth game. I was proud of myself for being able to recover and think about the next points rather beating myself up for my previous mistakes. My mental game has been a huge thing that I have been working on for a while and I was really glad how mentally strong I was by not giving up when I was losing. Thanks to all our family and friends that came out to support us. It meant so much to all of us to see how much love and support we have. This was for sure the best way to end our season and I am really looking forward to nationals next weekend."
