Softball Splits 2020 Opening Pair
February 22, 2020 | Softball
Opening the 2020 season Saturday in Houston, the Princeton softball team split a pair of games with Syracuse and host Houston.
Princeton 6, Syracuse 4
A two-run double from Madison Hamilton drove in base hits from Alex Colón and Lauren Murphy in the sixth to break a tie and help the Tigers beat Syracuse 6-4.
The late-game comeback allowed rookie Alexis Laudenslager to win her collegiate debut in relief, giving up a hit and a walk while striking out three in two and a third innings of work.
Syracuse took a lead in the top of the first on a two-run homer from Neli Casares-Maher before Princeton got the runs back in the bottom half of the inning on a Megan Donahey base hit, Ashley McDonald reaching on an error that picked up Donahey, and Mackenzie Meyer scoring McDonald on a groundout.
A walk and a Casares-Maher RBI double in the third put Syracuse back in front 3-2 before Princeton tied it up again on an Ali Blanchard homer in the fourth.
Syracuse again took the lead in the fifth on a Gabby Teran home run before Princeton tied it again in the bottom half of the inning when a single to Murphy and walks to Hamilton and Donahey loaded the bases for an Allison Harvey fielder's choice RBI.
Hamilton had her two-out, two-RBI double in the sixth to give Princeton the lead and, after Laudenslager stranded a walk and a base hit in the seventh, the win.
Murphy went 2 for 3 in her Tiger debut to lead the five Tigers with hits on the game.
Houston 11, Princeton 1 (6 inn.)
Megan Donahey had two hits in Princeton's second game of the day, an 11-1, six-inning defeat to Houston.
The game was scoreless into the third inning before Houston came up with three runs on a pair of homers from Charese Wyatt and Aspen Howie in the bottom of that inning. The Cougars added a home run from Kati Ray Brown in the fourth and a sacrifice fly from Lindsey Stewart in the fifth to go up 5-0.
Princeton got on the board in the sixth, using an Allison Harvey leadoff double, a Serena Starks base hit and a Gianna Mavica base hit to plate Harvey. Paige Hulsey's three-run home run was the big hit of a six-run sixth inning for the Cougars that ended the game.
Princeton will wrap its weekend in Houston with a 12:30 p.m. ET/11:30 a.m. CT game against Louisiana Tech. Live stats are available here.
