Hoy's Retirement, Juarez With Mexico U-20 Among Offseason News
February 24, 2020 | Women's Soccer
Though the next game for the Princeton women's soccer team is still about six months away, the offseason still has some program-related news.
Junior-to-be Gabi Juarez is competing with Mexico at the CONCACAF Women's U-20 Championship in the Dominican Republic. On Feb. 23, the team won its first of three group games, defeating Puerto Rico 2-1, and on Feb. 25, Juarez had a goal in Mexico's 4-0 win over Nicaragua. The team wrapped up the group stage on Feb. 27 against Guyana with a 3-0 win to advance to the round of 16.
In the knockout round on March 1, Juarez had one of Mexico's 12 goals in a 12-1 win over Grenada to advance to the quarterfinals, and in that next round, Juarez had Mexico's second goal in a 4-0 win on March 4 against Trinidad and Tobago. Mexico then advanced to the March 8 final against the U.S. with Juarez getting the clinching goal in penalties after a 1-1 tie. Though the U.S. won the final 4-1, with the finals berth, Mexico also got a ticket to the FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup in August in Panama and Costa Rica.
Jen Hoy '13, one of three Tiger alums on NWSL rosters for the season that wrapped up in October, has announced her retirement from pro soccer. Hoy, a three-time All-Ivy honoree and the 2012 Ivy League Player of the Year, played seven seasons in the NWSL between the Chicago Red Stars and Sky Blue FC and saw action in 107 games while scoring 17 goals and adding 11 assists. Off the field, Hoy has become a certified integrative nutrition health coach and will turn her focus there professionally.
Diana Matheson '08, another seven-season NWSL player, played with the Utah Royals last season, competing in 21 games and scoring a pair of goals. Tyler Lussi '17 completed her third season in the NWSL in 2019, all with the Portland Thorns, competing in 12 games and also scoring a pair of goals.
