No. 21 Princeton Takes Care Of Business vs. Penn; Clinches Ivy Tournament Berth

PRINCETON, N.J. – The No. 1 scoring defense in the country had one of its more impressive performances of the season as the No. 21 Princeton Tigers easily dropped the Penn Quakers, 80-44, at Jadwin Gym on Tuesday evening.

Earlier in the day, Bella Alarie was honored as the USBWA National Player of the Week and she did not disappoint. The two-time Ivy League Player of the Year dropped in 21 points, seven rebounds, two assists and two blocks.

Ellie Mitchell recorded 11 points, eight rebounds and six steals. Her six steals are tied for second all-time for a single-game by a freshmen. Abby Meyers also posted in double figures with 11 points. 10 different players scored for Princeton in the win.

The Tigers ended the first quarter on a 14-2 sprint to take a 21-8 lead after 10 minutes. In that frame, the home unit knocked down 9-of-15 shots (53.3 percent).

Penn made just three baskets in the first stanza.

The second quarter got worse.
Â
The Quakers made one basket and registered five points. They finished the first half 4-of-20 from the floor and did not make a three-pointer. Princeton expanded its lead to 21, 34-13, at the intermission.

Penn outscored Princeton by one, 18-17, in the third frame behind 14 points from Kayla Padilla, but couldn't make it any closer in the final 10 minutes. The Tigers posted 29 points on 11-of-17 shooting (64.7 percent) in the fourth and never allowed Penn to make it a contest.

Princeton clinched a berth in the Ivy League Tournament with the win. The Tigers are now 22-1 overall and 10-0 in the Ivy League. Head coach Carla Berube's squad's 18-game winning streak is now the third longest streak in the country behind No. 1 South Carolina and No. 2 Baylor. Penn dropped to 17-6 overall and 7-3 in conference action.

The Tigers welcome Brown and Yale to Jadwin this weekend to wrap up the five-game homestand.
