February 07, 2020 | Women's Basketball
PRINCETON, N.J. – The No. 1 scoring defense in the country shined as the Princeton Tigers handled the Cornell Big Red, 60-29, at Jadwin Gym on Friday evening.
Â
Cornell came into the game, leading the Ivy League in field goal percentage (44.9) and three-point field goal percentage (35.7). The Big Red did not score a basket in the second quarter and produced just one in the fourth frame.
Â
They finished the contest with seven total. It just the third time since 1981 that Princeton has held an opponent under 30 points. It's the second lowest score that Princeton has held Cornell to in the 80-game history between the two foes.
Â
Bella Alarie registered 13 points to lead all scorers while Taylor Baur and Grace Stone added 10 points each. No Big Red Player contributed more than seven points. It was also Carla Berube's 400th career victory. She has produced a .805 winning percentage (400-97) in her coaching tenure.
Â
The Tigers ran off a 7-0 sprint to begin the game and 12 of the first 14 points, forcing a Cornell timeout. Princeton finished off the frame with a 20-8 lead. The Big Red had just three tallies from the charity stripe in the second quarter as the Tigers led 31-11 at the break.
Â
Cornell's Shannon Mulroy hit a long-range bucket at the 8:38 mark of the third quarter to cut the deficit to 21, 35-14.
Â
Why was that significant?
Â
It was the road squad's first basket in over 16 minutes of game action. During that stretch, Cornell missed 19 consecutive shots and turned the ball over 13 times. Princeton rolled the rest of the way to a 31-point victory.
Â
Cornell finished 7-of-45 from the floor (15.6 percent) and made just three three-pointers. It was Princeton's sixth win this season by 30+ points.
Â
With its 12th straight win, Princeton improves to 16-1 overall and 4-0 in the Ivy League while Cornell dropped to 9-8 this season and 2-3 in the conference. The Tigers finish the weekend vs. Columbia tomorrow. Tip-off is set for 5 p.m.
